...ovarian cysts, can I bend your ears for a bit? For about...gosh, five years now? I've been able to feel a large lump in my lower left abdomen. Used to be just when I coughed or something, it's almost like whatever it is would be pushed out to where I could feel it, but now I can feel it all the time, and it's gotten bigger. If I had to guess, I'd say the size of a grapefruit, maybe bigger. Sometimes my muscles in that area will cramp up and vibrate so bad I can barely even breathe (kind of like a charlie horse in your leg, but this is in my lower abdomen). I have sharp, stabbing pains from time to time in that area too - which have now started to happen on the right side as well. I also feel like I have menstrual cramps off and on all the time, not just around my period. I will have very light, mucousy breakthrough bleeding at times, and my periods are extremely heavy. Also, my PMS type symptoms (pain, nausea, extreme irritability, low grade fever) are worse in the week and a half AFTER my period instead of before. I asked the doctor about the lump last year at my gyno appt and she said that if it were a cyst, I wouldn't be able to physically feel it, and kind of brushed it off and said that it was probably a hernia. Does anyone who has had a cyst have any experience with any of the symptoms I mentioned? Or is the doctor probably right? I am going to be setting up an appt soon because the pain is getting to be more than I can reasonably bear, but I hate to go in uninformed and have to just take whatever she says as true because I don't know any different, kwim? Thanks for any information anyone can give me.

If your gyno blew you off like that and didn't do an u/s or anything, then I would find a new one. I have yet to be able to feel a cyst from the outside, but I do get symptoms similar to yours when I have a cyst. However, it's also very rare to have a cyst last for 5 years, be that large and not have massive pain. If it was that big it would probably be twisting your ovary... I would definitely find out what is wrong.

Thanks Ryanne, I appreciate your input. The pain is pretty bad, but I've kind of just gotten to the point where I have to ignore it and go on, you know? Most of the time it's not a *sharp* pain, more of a dull 'just letting you know I'm here' pain, so I just push it aside. The times when it is really sharp I just sit still until it passes. This doctor wasn't an OB/GYN, but an internal medicine doctor, I use her as my primary care physician. I swore I would never go back to my last OB/GYN because he's such a jerk, and unfortunately with our insurance the pick of doctors around here is pretty slim. I forgot to add in my first post, in case it makes any difference - I haven't been on any kind of hormonal birth control since 2003, I've had three c-sections, and I had my tubes tied with my last c-section in Aug 2004.

It sounds like it could be a cyst or possibly even a fibroid from your description of the pain. I am unsure as to what it is you are feeling and would definitely follow up with an OB-GYN. Wish you had some better choices with your insurance. Would your insurance work with you more if you had a referral?

you definitely sound to me as though you need an ultrasound. I would think they would start with the "traditional" ultrasound, and if they didn't get a good look at what they thought they needed to see, then a transvaginal would be done. I had a grapefruit sized cyst. The ultrasound doctor thought it was on my ovary. The tech thought it was on my fallopian tube. It was indeed on my fallopian tube. I am fairly certain that mine had been there a long time, as yours has. There is no way to know how long it was there. I noticed it one day when I layed on my stomach... although I'd never noticed it before or after that particular time. (However, I was also pregnant, although only a few weeks along, and had a miscarriage around that time) They were checking for multiple things when they found my large cyst. I had sharp pain from time to time, but more often it was a dull throbbing pain.... sort of like 'directed' cramps. (in that they were only in one spot) I also had (and oddly, still have) a sort of shuddering feeling in the muscles (?) down there where it was. It's like the muscle (or whatever it is) just shakes from time to time. I would find a doctor to give you an ultrasound. Mine was taken out laparoscopically, and I am extremely glad! =)

Sometimes the muscles jumping is extremely painful (to the point that I can barely breathe) and other times it's just like a baby kicking - you can feel it but it doesn't hurt. (In fact, the first time it happened, I thought for sure I was somehow pregnant and didn't realize it, FREAKED. ME. OUT.) OK, that settles it. I'm setting up an appointment and will insist on an ultrasound. Thanks everyone for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

Good! I'm glad to hear this and I pray they have some answers for you this time. Will you be going back to the same OB/GYN or a new one?

I only see them for prenatal/postnatal visits. But yes, it will be the same doctor I saw last year. I actually really like her, I'm just not thrilled with the way she handled this situation last year. But to be fair, she was only going on my word last year as the lump was not big enough to be felt unless I was able to "move" it outward some. I don't think she'll brush me off this time, she should actually be able to feel something there too.

Had my doctor's appointment today, just wanted to update. She was able to feel the mass this time, but she still thinks it's a hernia. I have a surgery consult on the 24th.

ORIGINAL: pumpkin she didn't do an ultrasound? No. I have to assume (and hope LOL) they will do something to verify what this is before surgery. But I won't know about all of that until my consultation.

hmm.. you should check with your insurance company to be certain that if they don't do an ultrasound, that your surgery will be covered. When I had surgery last time our insurance company insisted that I have an ultrasound first... but it wasn't a big deal since I'd already had multiple ones at that time.

Thanks for the heads up! I will be sure to contact the insurance company after my consultation and know more about what is going to happen.
