This is a poll to see what other homeschool families do for health insurance. Since the majority of us have one income families, I wondered what some of you do.
If you have a belief behind what you do, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

We have Blue Cross that we pay for ourselves. It's a high deductible policy that allows us to use a health savings account. The cost of the policy is pretty close to what I would pay if I worked enough hours to get health insurance at my work, but we still pay all medical costs since the deductible is so high. It's basically catastrophic insurance. I still turn in claims and, because of the insurance, sometimes the amount we have to pay is less than what was originally billed.

We are VERY blessed. My hubby has benefits through his job, and while most companies are cutting back, they actually improved their benefits. It is very nice. They also reimburse us for our deductibles.

Hubby has insurance through his job.
When we lived in Florida, I knew many families who were part of a medical co-op program, I think it was called Good Samaritan? Anyway they paid for all small expenses out-of-pocket but send regular donations to the co-op to cover big expenses for all members. Then if you need surgery, you submit your big bills and donations help pay them.

My husband has insurance through his job. Even though he works for the federal government, it's still around $400 per month for insurance, plus dedictibles and co-pay.

We have had many different types of coverage over the years due to job instability in the past. When I had appendicitis, we had high deductible insurance. I had felt very strongly that we needed something and we carefully chose our policy. Thank goodness we did, as it ended up costing us a lot less money for the insurance and the bills than it would have for all of it. The thing about paying yourself is that you get no discounts. The hospital bill was significantly discounted due to being contracted with the insurance company. Even for the regular office visits I had, we paid less due to the insurance discount than if we had no insurance.

I agree with Cynthia. Our policy is in the low 300's. We just got a notice that it will be going up to the 350's. That's with two increased this year already due to the fact that Merv and I both turned 50 this year. We have a $10,000 deductible. Our last policy kept creeping up and got into the 700's. That's when we went with BCBS. I'd talk to your agent and other agencies and see if there's something better out there.

When we had high deductible insurance, our deductible was $2500. We went through an insurance broker.

We all have it through the state. When the kids dad was working we all had it through him. Then he lost his job so the kids and I have state. I hope to make enough this year to qualify for CHIP because it's better.

We are blessed to have insurance through hubby's work, and we pay about $400 a month for it. We have co-pays for each visit, and our deductible is $1000 per person / per year.

I thought CHIP was for all income levels - the more you make the more you pay. We actually looked into it for our kids, because there are not many doctors in our are which are in network w/ our current insurance. However, CHIP would have been more expensive than what we are paying now. My sister needs it for her baby, because her health insurance only covers her. And because of income, I'm not sure they will have to pay anything. It is excellent coverage - many doctors, low co-pays, and it included vision and prescription. It might even include dental.

Dh is in the military, so that's the insurance we have now. However, he's looking at retiring in 2010. We've discussed opening our own business, so this could become a big concern for us before too long.

With CHIP if you make too little you have to take medical assistance, you can't get CHIP. Once you make a certain amount then you can get CHIP and there's no UPPER income limit. For kids it's free up to a certain point and then based on income there's different costs. For adults there's a 1 year waiting list to get the adult equivalent. It's frustrating for me because there's basically no dental coverage with med assistance but there is with CHIP.

Wow - that would be frustrating. It doesn't even make sense. Why don't they just do away w/ medical assistance and re-vamp the CHIP scale? My friend has a foster baby - and they automatically have CHIP. While she would never want to deny foster children medical care, she says that it can be frustrating because his insurance is tons better than the family insurance - which, off course, they have to pay for.

That is really nice that they CHIP for adults. Our children have used CHIP in the past, but that particular area had nothing for adults. You are very blessed to have that there!
My children have been on CHIP, State insurance, insurance through an employer, or no insurance at all. God has always made a way to provide for our medical needs and I am very grateful for that! I have testimonies I could give of how God provided for us in just the right timing and I can look back and be in "awe" with how things worked out. Our God is a wonderful God!
