Congratulations Northstar!

Yeah, for boys Amber. But apparently I am going to have to hold up Team Pink for a while by myself next year.

Well,I failed the 3 hour. It was close but definitely a fail and no big surprise my fasting one was the worst. I really struggled with that one with Josh. I told my OB this morning that although I have no problem with an even tighter diet and the glucose monitoring I am not going to see the diabetes people every week this time. I'll go for an initial consult and get the glucometer and diet but that is it. The nutritionists were pretty useless after I got the initial guidelines last time anyway. And since they have you do a weekly call in for glucose levels I just don't see the need to go in and be weighed on a totally inaccurate scale (moved every day) and have strange advice given to me based on my weight alone. Seriously their scale said I lost 7lbs then gained back 5 in the course of 2 weeks. Both my records at home and the OB's office had something like a 1lb loss over the same period. The OB has me coming in every 2 weeks from 28 on anyway. I'm 26 weeks now!

Do you have your meter from last time? Because your OB can write you a prescrip. for test strips and lancets. I didn't see the dietician with Jac. Not even once.

Unfortunately not. If I did she would have called in the prescription today. If I can do everything in one visit I'll see the nutritionist. If not, I won't see them this time at all. I had to buy some stuff today but I should be able to do the full on food plan tomorrow. I needed to stock up on stuff that I could easily measure - artisan bread from a local baker makes it hard to figure out a carb serving. So I'm just going back to grocery store stuff for now.

I am planning a baby shower for 2 friends who are due 4 days apart. One of them has GD. Any tips/suggestions of what foods to serve and what to avoid? I am just planning on doing snack type foods, not a meal.

Your OB can write you a prescrip (or call it in) for a meter too. Yeah I stay away from artisan breads when I'm pg. My bread of choice (because I can eat a whole sandwich with it and some apple slices) is Nature's Own Double Fiber Wheat.

How thoughtful of you Emily I would suggest doing a meat platter or a cheese & veggie platter (no pickles) and if you want to offer fruit don't do melon, grapes nor banana but rather berries. Hope that helps.

Emily, it's great you are thinking of your friend. Something I thought of is to include some 100% whole wheat crackers along with the cheeses. And to have some unsweetened ice tea or find out her diet sweetener preference. The only other thing that comes to mind (if you are doing "heavy" snacks) is try to have some type of meat without bread, not just wings or meatballs.

As far as my GD, the OB scored major points today. She is NOT sending me to the diabetes life care group that was such a pain last time. I will see the nurse practitioner at the endocrinology group partner. My OB/GYN practice is part of an umbrella multi-specialty group. Supposedly the endo group is much more my type of practice - give me the info and trust me to contact you on a set schedule. I don't need someone looking over my shoulder and second guessing me all the time. I'll have a 1 hour (as opposed to a 3 hour group class) initial visit followed by weekly calls (I call them) and at most monthly visits (in addition to reg prenatal care). Which I will decline if my numbers are in line. Still more than I think is totally necessary, but the vibe I am getting about this group is very different. The last time I felt like they were just waiting for me to fail - that I could not possibly have GD and NOT need insulin 4x/day and to have my diet adjusted 2x a week....Basically that it was impossible for me to intelligently and successfully manage my own care. Anyway, enough soapbox, rant, vent whatever!

Yep, I agree with Kim, berries are good as they are low GI.

Some small wholewheat toast squares, or wholewheat crackers, with cheese or meat on, might be nice too!

I got BH contractions pretty early this time too. But nothing ugly until more like 20 weeks (and that was only when hauling Josh), before that they were wimpy and not more than a couple a day once or twice a week. Even now I think they are not as strong as they were with Josh at the same point. Pretty much every day though.

I had them around this time with Gabby too. I just have an irritable uterus, I guess. I called the doctor today because I was having them 5-8 in an hour yesterday, which is more then I am comfortable with... So now I am relegated to as much rest as possible, lots of fluids, an empty bladder(hard to do when your drinking so much), and she said to get a Calcium/Magnesium supplement. They never caused any premature dilation with Gabby but gosh darn are they annoying.

Kris, I hope the endo department is more your style Sounds like you have a nice plan worked out.

Ryanne, hope you can get those BH to settle down a bit. What does the calcium/magnesius supplement do?

My real preference for the GD would be for someone to just give me the updated info packet and the prescriptions. But that's not going to happen without a fight and if what I was told yesterday about the schedule and management level from the endo group is right then I can work with them. A little accountability can be a good thing, plus they could pick up something early that I might not notice until it was major. I'm just hoping they have more common sense than the previous group.

I have irritable bowel, but I've never heard of irritable uterus. Is it a medical term? If not, it sounds like an apt description.

I'm guessing that it reduces the uterus' tendency to contract? I've heard calcium/magnesium recommended for PMS and cramping, so I'd imagine it's somehow related.

I take it back about not showing; I'm wearing maternity pants today (I have music practice and need to be able to breathe!). I definitely show in these.

Well, I made bra shopping trip #8 yesterday (actually trips 9-12 if you count all the bra shops I visited), but finally this one was successful! Found a reasonably priced nursing bra at a nursing bra shop; didn't even know La Leche League made bras, but it works. Also discovered that the plus-sized store has options; they're more expensive, but if this one doesn't work I'll go back there. I'd just have to put up with stripes and polka dots because their plain bras are thin in stock. I'm also relieved to find that they've started carrying 36 band sizes there, which means I can still shop there when I'm not pg anymore.

Also found some great stuff at consignment shops; now that I've got about 5 tops, 2 sweaters, and 2 pairs of pants I think I'm all set. I also managed to find workout pants--miracle of miracle, they're not cotton! So I can actually sweat in them! I am beginning to see consignment shops as personal shoppers who go to the States to shop for me, so I don't have to. I find all kinds of brands I can't get here (H&M, Gap, Target, etc).

Lol! It is a real medical term and a perfect description. Laying on my belly causes BH, wearing the wrong type of maternity jeans, having a full bladder, being even slightly dehydrated, pushing a shopping cart, etc... Fortunately they don't seem to do anything to my cervix, they just annoy me.

And yes, Magnesium is a smooth muscle relaxer so it should help calm things down.

Jen, I'm glad you found what you needed :) Just wait, in a couple months you'll need to shop all over again I love consignment/thrift stores. I always find cool stuff at them. Last week I picked up some cute maternity shirts and glass baby bottles. Both things that were on my "list" to purchase new if needed.

How are you liking the fit of your Gap Maternity clothes?

Really liking it; the tops I found are newer so they're nice and long. And the one that has a seam under the bust actually hits under the bust! I like the tops I found from Target and JC Penney too. (The one from JCP was never worn... brand new $5 white blouse! Woohoo!)

I think I'm most pleased by the workout pants... they're made by a European company called Boob and retail $120 new. I've never paid more than $20 for anything on consignment, but I needed workout pants that wouldn't show my belly anyhow, and I would have paid more than that for new non-mat workout wear elsewhere. Apparently this stuff never stretches out no matter what you do to it. Now I just need to find a long workout top or two, and I'm set.

And yeah, I know I'll need to shop more later; that's why I'm not getting anything else now. I'm sorta glad I don't have any consignment shops downtown, or I'd wind up buying more than I need.

I love Boob clothes.

I am currently on the quest for yoga pants(either maternity or not) that are long enough and don't end up hitting my ankles. Preferably nicer looking ones that I can wear out in public since my jeans are bothering me. I need to go by Victoria's Secret and try on a pair of their's to see what size I need, then I can order them online in different lengths.

Well, my good friend had significant contractions (every 5 minutes) for around 30 hours then they stopped! Her midwife did an ultrasound and baby's arm was stuck near the head. They repositioned the baby, checked that the cord was ok, now they're hoping to get labor going again.

I didn't know they could reposition a baby's limbs; that's interesting. I hope your friend's labour goes well!

Ryanne, I hear ya on longer pants... I'm 5'8". Consignment shops don't label lengths on pants; I must have tried on 30 pairs of jeans in the last couple of months before I found a pair long enough that fit OK. Some were almost short enough to wear as capris. If you find jeans too constricting, you might try stretchy corduroys... mine from Motherhood are almost as comfy as yoga pants (and warm enough for our winters!)
