WASHINGTON — Although the national economy has begun to bounce back, governors said Saturday that the worst was yet to come at the state level, where revenues are still falling short of projections. “State revenues continue to deteriorate, as most states are witnessing monthly totals lower than their recent forecasts, which have been revised downward,” said Gov. Jim Douglas of Vermont, the chairman of the National Governors Association, which opened its winter meeting here on Saturday. Read full story

...But the stimulus is working, I can feel it working, just like Tegrin shampoo! quote:
The new governor of New Jersey, Christopher J. Christie, a Republican, said that while the federal aid had helped states, “it really just put off difficult choices.” Exactly.

Sure...just blame it on the person who was in office before you. Then you don't have to do squat but spend more money to fix the fact that you don't have any money to begin with.

Massachusetts has already made some cuts and increased the sales tax. I guess this must be signs to come.

Do you suppose that maybe it was Tegrin shampoo that gave Chris Matthews the tingle up his leg? In the presence of Barry O'Carter?... doubtful. It would be comparable to the Transfiguration I'm sure. I remember the commercials years ago for Tegrin, where someone would lather up half of their head and the other side with brand X shampoo. They would exclaim "It's working, I can feel it!"

The stimulus didn't put off the difficult choices. The difficult choices can still be made. Use the stimulus and make the difficult choices...maybe that would be a real help

The difficult choices can still be made That would assure the candidate, the loss of the Frisbee Golf vote.

Obama is now aware that health reform is dead and he wants to throw lots of money at education to see if he can get the far left agenda more fully institutionalized in the lives of our kids. There needs to be some equalization of forces here and I suspect the fall will see moderates rising as Republicans take more seats in the house and Senate thus strengthening the hand of the middle. The middle would be people who realize that the ethic which says we are all responsible for our own choices is balanced by the ethics which says we can accomplish more working together than apart. Might I state that I am fully fed up with hearing about how the stimulus is working. There is no conclusive evidence that the stimulus has done anything except push off the very difficult macro-level problems facing our economy. Has the stimulus helped many individuals? Yes, without a doubt, most exceptionally it has helped those individuals who work for big Wall Street banks but that is help nonetheless. But here is the facts. Oil is at $80 per barrel in the face of 10% (17% real) US unemployment. Those who still have jobs are seeing wage freezes, furloughs, and demands for ever more productivity. In short they are either being worked to death or worked too little. US demand for oil is down 6% YOY. That means that world oil demand and depletion has more than made up for our decline. Thus a US recovery (which absolutely must involve an increase in our demand for oil since we have no other scalable and cheap energy source readily available) will drive oil back over $100 dollars very easily, even into the range of $200 unless US demand once again plummets, ie a double dip recession. Gas would be over $5 at the pump. In fact it is the financial crisis and the deflation and reduction in demand it caused that spared us when oil went over $140 back in '08. The stimulus was never capable of fixing this problem. And the stimulus was never capable of giving back to America its moral heart. The States are cutting university education like crazy and they should. I am going to argue that the college life has been a giant bottle full of similac for at least 15 years. In many colleges over 30% drop out without a degree but are happy to spend the financial aid on keggers and funny hats for the football games. Raising tuition to a level that ensures everyone who gets to go to college understands the great privilege of such opportunity in the broader scheme of human existence will make sure that we can fully fund those who abilities and work ethic make them viable candidates for the jobs they seek. The lie of middle class college for all is that there simply cannot be enough bachelors level jobs for all. The economy cannot create 80,000 new executive assistant jobs in psychiatric practices to accomodate the 80,000 bachelors degrees in psychology per year that would come out of a system where every kid just does what they want. This is what we are facing. Not a nation that is being held back by the idea of no free lunch, but a nation that has gotten mommy's breast by little demands more and more over decades until now we actually think that being a rocket scientist is possible for everyone and it is their right to become one if they so choose. You want to know why public schools are failing? They are failing because the family is failing, because the moral foundation of our society is eroded and collapsing ever faster. Poverty is not an excuse for poor morals. A family can be poor and loving, if they choose to be. But we as a nation have sown to the wind, and now we will most assuredly reap the whirlwind. And when many in this country come to the bitter end under ash filled skies and shake their fists at God it will be clear to the whole universe who is righteous and who is wicked. 'Choose life that you may live!' That's what He has said to every generation and to every nation in their time. And yet the gospel is still preached and whoever will may come and drink freely of the water of life. May the Lord humble us that He might lift us up in righteousness. (Kudos to Brent Scowcroft!)

We are now reaping the harvest for the seeds we have sown for the last 50 years. quote:
