Two words that people seem to spell wrong quite often: Separate -- I learned in middle school that there's "a rat" in separate. That helps me get that one right. Surprise -- That first 'r' is missing quite often (suprise). I try to be good with spelling and grammar, but I'll occasionally mess up something. Usually because my fingers work faster than my brain!

I remember "separate" because I think of paring an apple and separating the skin from the rest of the fruit.

And I just count on Firefox spell check to make sure I spell separate right.

Loving this thread. These things drive me so totally nuts, especially when I read them in books, or see them on billboards or menus. And I do, a lot! Grrrrrrrrr! Speaking of which, have they changed "a lot" into one word? It seems that's all I see anymore.

Nope, it's still "a lot". There's also no such word as "alright."

Try using it in school--you will get marked down for it. quote:
Generally, most editors and teachers don’t think “alright” is all right. If you’re in doubt, it’s best to stick with the more widely accepted two-word “all right,” especially in formal academic or professional writing. LINK

Another interesting article about "alright". But, it's in the Dictionary!

Lol! Well, the two words do seem to be "loosely" related!

It really seems to me that I learned it as a spelling word. It's been over 45 years, but it's like right there in the depths of my memory. I could be wrong though.
